Traditional Inspiration Meets Futuristic Sophistication with the Mercedes-Maybach Concept
Classically inspired design values, revolutionary high-tech results. Introducing the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, a luxury-class coupe concept car. The electric vehicle, debuted at Monterey Car Week in Pebble Beach, California in August, is the amalgamation of design principles simultaneously futuristic and traditional.
The aesthetic of the Vision 6 honours the age of classic aero coupes with features such as the extended hood, gullwing doors, low roofline, and rearward position of the cabin. Make no mistake, though the concept surely references the retro design aesthetic of past aero coupes, this car is a modern reinterpretation of that classic style. Its front radiator grille consists of vertical struts, evoking imagery of a pinstripe suit, while luxury yachts inspire the extended round boat tail rear. Beneath the proportionally excessive exterior rests the entirely electrical driving system. All-wheel drive is powered by four compact electric motors, one for each wheel. The 80 kWh battery located under the floor pushes these motors to produce 738 horsepower, capable of acceleration from 0-100 km/h in less than four seconds with a top speed of 250 km/h and a range of over 500 km on a full battery charge.
The ultra modern design of the concept’s interior provides a sharp contrast to the classically inspired exterior. Driving-related data & gauges are projected against the full width of the transparent windshield, and can be controlled via gestures from the driver. A 360° lounge atmosphere is created by the dashboard that forms elegantly into the door panels, which in turn wrap down into the seat landscape and centre consol. The lower panels of the doors are crafted from elm wood, which effortlessly transitions into the floor, again alluding to a yachting feel and contrasting against the rest of the futuristically digital interior.
The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 is a revitalization of a classic aero coupe, lifted into the modern era, highlighted by an entirely electric engine. Keeping with the Mercedes-Benz design philosophy of sensual purity, this concept coupe may certainly be the classic car of the future & the ultimate in luxury.
